F1 just had its last race at Zandvoort, and it was crazy to say the least.
Norris was on pole ahead of Russell and Antonelli. There was heavy rain before the race, so drivers were on a mix of inters and full wets on the grid. Sergio Perez started from the pit lane after Cadillac changed the rear suspension on his car without the approval of the FIA.
At lights out, Lando led, and Antonelli overtook George within the first couple of turns. Not even a lap into the race, Verstappen lost the rear at the final corner and hit the wall hard, triggering a red flag. Max Verstappen out of his last ever home race, not even a lap in.
The race was finally ready to start again, or so we thought. During the second formation lap, Ollie Bearman's engine died, which triggered yet another formation lap. After making it past the third, the race relaunched and Antonelli launched better than Norris and took the lead.
After the restart, Lindblad and Colapinto were hit with drive-through penalties for overtaking under double yellows. Lawson also got a 10-second time penalty for a yellow flag infringement and still stayed in the top ten, finishing seventh. Colapinto picked up a second penalty mid-race.
Running third, Piastri pitted on lap 18 to cover a Russell undercut, but came out in traffic instead, and the stop cost him his position. Leclerc got past him on lap 35, Hamilton on 36. Piastri finished sixth, 32 seconds behind his own teammate.
Antonelli made his second stop on lap 40, Norris seven laps later. Ferrari kept Hamilton out, so by lap 54 he was leading on track with Antonelli and Norris both within a second of him. Antonelli went for the inside of Tarzan to pass Hamilton, got hampered as the Ferrari defended, and Norris swept around the outside of both into the net lead. Later that same lap Hamilton ran out of energy and Norris took the lead for real.
Moments later a virtual safety car came out. Hamilton dove into the pits for softs and Antonelli followed the next lap, which dropped him behind Russell, who stayed out on old hards. Antonelli was quicker, so Mercedes told Russell to swap. It left Russell exposed to Hamilton, but a second virtual safety car for debris helped him hold third.
With three laps left, Sainz and Albon were battling over a position worth nothing. Sainz locked up into Turn 1 and hit his own teammate. Albon retired with floor damage, and Sainz got a ten-second penalty and finished last anyway.
Hulkenberg finished eighth after avoiding Bortoleto, who spun just meters behind Verstappen's crash. Alonso took ninth on a one-stop, Aston Martin's best result of the year. Gasly picked up the final point.
McLaren have now won the last three Dutch Grands Prix: Norris, Piastri, Norris. Antonelli leaves with a 59-point lead. At a track where nobody can pass, the race was decided by a pass.
